Making Patterns & Loose Parts Bin

We have been learning all about patterns! Patterns are everywhere and can be shown in many different ways.
"It is only a pattern if it repeats!"- A.F

Loose Parts Play Bin at Copperfield School
Our Loose Parts Play Bin has arrived! We are the first and only school in Calgary that will have a Loose Parts Play Bin and we are very fortunate to pilot this project in collaboration with The Calgary Deep South Coalition. Their mission is to help build a strong community that supports families in providing young children with nurturing, caring environments for healthy development.

The Loose Parts Bin is on the back compound to the side of one of the gym exits. The actual bin remains outside but the loose parts materials will only be out in the bin during school hours. Some of the materials we currently have include: buckets, fabric, a couple of skipping ropes and PVC piping. We hope to add to this as the year progresses.

Loose parts offer unique opportunities of play:
-          They allow children to manipulate their environment.
-          Loose parts are inclusive. All ages and abilities can engage with loose parts. There is no right or wrong way to use the parts. All kindergarten students might use a PVC pipe as a slide for little pebbles, while older students may use the pipes to make the frame of a fort.
-          Loose Parts play encourages development across all five areas of development.
-          Loose Parts play encourages problem solving and creative thinking.

We hope the students at Copperfield School enjoy using their creativity, design thinking and learning to work with others through this project.

Chances for Further Learning in the Community!

As our school development plan for this year has a strong focus on math,
Copperfield community and school have been given the opportunity to work with an amazing artist and teacher named Sharon Fortowsky. We would like to engage our Copperfield families with a math task that you can work on together. You may have seen some of the electrical boxes in Copperfield with some beautiful paintings on them.  One of them is by the Shell station and the other is on 52nd.  Sharon has painted these boxes with a purpose and is encouraging parents and students to take a look at the boxes as there are math riddles that go along with the paintings. A short article with the riddle has been posted in the Copperfield-Mahogany community association newsletter Copperfield Mahogany Community newsletter
The first clues so far have also been posted on the community facebook page Copperfield Mahogany Facebook page.   Because it might be difficult for families to get over to the physical boxes, there is a link to the riddles and pictures of the boxes for your family to take a look at.  We encourage you to discuss with your child any math that your child sees on these two boxes.  Please copy the link below to take a look at the three riddles that have been given so far.

A reminder that we have our grade 1 assembly tomorrow! Please make sure that students are wearing either a red shirt or their Copperfield shirt. Our assembly starts at 9am and everyone is invited!

I encourage you to ask your child which one they did and see if they can show you how to do it at home.

Our job this weekend is to observe the pond!! We are going to be scientists all year and we are going to document our findings about the pond, so we need to be keeping a good eye on it!

Pull Tabs

The Grade 1 students are continuing to collect pull tabs to donate to the Calgary Lions Club. They can come from cans like drink cans, dog food cans, cat food cans etc. Volunteers at the Lions Club take the aluminum pull tabs to be recycled and refunded money is donated to help send diabetic children to Diabetic Camp.  Please help us show generosity by bringing in clean pull tabs to a Grade 1 room and we will be keeping track of the collection. New Meeting Spot

Dear Parents:

As per the parent letter regarding Vesta Fencing that was emailed out to you on Thursday September 13, Grade 1 students will have a new meeting spot starting Monday Morning. We will be meeting on the compound area between the two orange doors at teacher’s signs. Supervision will start at 8:05 AM each morning until the students go in. We highly encourage parents to drop off their students and be on their way to best alleviate congestion on the compound. There will be numerous teacher supervisors wearing orange vests to ensure student safety and help guide them to their correct meeting spots. All Grade 1 teachers will be coming out to pick up their classes until further notice.  Thank you again for your continued cooperation and flexibility.

Please make sure you send in the student information consent forms and media release forms. You can find these forms on the school website.
Thanks!

Warm Clothes and Growth Mindset

Today we learned about Growth Mindset and the power of the word YET! This important word helps us grow our brains. Our brain is a muscle and we can make it stronger by exercising it. We do this by challenging ourselves and working on things that maybe we are not good at yet.

PLEASE WEAR WARM CLOHES TOMORROW. Every one should have a coat, warm boots, mittens, and hats. Stay warm everyone!

IN ORDER TO FIND THE FORMS GO TO THE SCHOOL WEBSITE AND YOU CAN FIND THE LINK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE. PLEASE PRINT THESE OFF AND SIGN THEM. WE NEED THEM IN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
